Rather than a "one size fits all" approach, I believe in tailoring my lessons to the individual's wants and needs, figuring out what works for them, and what doesn't. I know from my own experience that when studying, a happy student is a challenged student. Of course, each student has their own goals in what they want to get out of studying the drums, but I think the most important thing is a sense of accomplishment, improvement, and creative satisfaction. If you don't feel like you are getting anything out of the lesson, then what is the point ?

Generally, when a new student comes in for a lesson, I see where they are at, where they want to be, and figure out the best way to get them there. In my drum studio I have over fifty different drum books in which to draw inspiration from, as well audio and video recording capabilities so the student can take home what they have learned for further reference. Depending on the level of the student, some (but not all) of the subject matter would include: warm-ups, hand and foot strengthening, limb independence, styles (jazz, latin, rock, etc), chart reading and writing, odd time, soloing, polyrhythms, etc.

In closing, I believe music should be an outlet, a creative joy in which a person can express themselves, and it is my hope that any student that decides to study with me becomes more inspired, excited, and fulfilled in respect to their musical endeavors. Thanks and happy drumming!!
